How to Change Sand in a Pool Filter
A properly functioning pool filter is essential to maintain a hygienic swimming environment. We all know that sand filters are the most common type of filters used in pools. But it’s not just enough to own a sand filter for your pool. As the filter works, it picks up dirt, debris, and impurities that get trapped in the sand. Over time, the sand becomes clogged and needs to be replaced. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of changing sand in a pool filter.
Why is it important to change sand in a pool filter?
Swimming pool water passes through sand filters and as the sand filters out hostiles in the water, the sand slowly picks up dirt and debris. This over time creates a buildup of dirt resulting in its efficiency dropping. Eventually, the sand in the filter gets too clogged, water can't pass through, and even the strongest pool pump can't force it through.
This loss in efficiency makes it hard for the pool filter to cycle water properly, creating a dirty and unhygienic swimming environment. How often you need to change the sand in a pool filter depends on the size of the pool, how often it’s used, and filter size.
Before you start
Before you start, you might want to get some tools together. Gather your tools by identifying your sand filter system first. Look for the model name and number, and check the owner’s manual for recommended tools. This will save you the trouble from running around once you’ve started. The required tools generally include a few screwdrivers, a filter wrench, and/or pliers.
Now that you have everything you need, it's time to start filling it up with clean new sand.
Step-by-step guide
Step 1: Turn off the pump
To ensure your safety while working on the filter, switch off the pool and turn off the pool pump.
Step 2: Relieve the pressure
There will still be water in the system, so it's important to relieve any pressure before attempting to open the filter. To do this, turn the air relief valve on top of the filter's opening until no more water is flowing. If your filter doesn't have an air relief valve, move onto step 3.
Step 3: Open the filter
Using the correct tools, remove the screws or bolts holding the filter's top in place. Carefully lift the top off the filter body.
Step 4: Empty the Sand
Inside the filter, you’ll find layers of sand that need to be removed. This is it, the dirty moment. Place a bucket beside the filter's body and begin scooping the sand out of the filter body using a small plastic scoop.
Step 5: Inspect the laterals
The laterals are the small pipes that lead from the inside of the filter to the pool return. Look for indications of cracks or holes, which would indicate broken components. Replace any defective pieces after removing sand.
Step 6: Rinse and Clean
Scrub deep in the filter and rinse out as much debris as possible once sand has been removed.
Step 7: Add New Sand
Before adding new sand, use a drop cloth to prevent sand from collecting under the filter. To refill the filter back with sand, add at the brink of the filter so the sand won't damage the laterals. Be mindful not to overfill the filter with sand.
Step 8: Reassemble the Filter
Return the filter top to its original location and secure it in place with screws or bolts.
Step 9: Restart the Pump
Now that everything is in place, start up the pool pump to begin filtering water back to your pool.
Conclusion
By following these step-by-step instructions, changing the sand in your pool filter should be a simple and straightforward process. You should ensure that you've frequently changed out the sand in your pool filter for optimum filtration of your pool water. Remember, a well-maintained and clean pool filter is paramount to the health of your swimming pool.
