Can You Use Masonry Sand in a Pool Filter?

Pool filters play a critical role in keeping your pool water clean and clear. When it comes to selecting a filter medium, many pool owners opt for sand, which has been used for decades due to its great particle retention capacity, ease of use, low maintenance requirements, and affordability. But with so many different types of sand on the market, it is essential to choose the right one for your pool filter. In this article, we will delve into the question of whether masonry sand can be used in pool filters or not.

What Is Masonry Sand?

Masonry sand is finely ground, high-quality sand that is primarily used to create mortar, cement, stucco, and other construction materials. It is known for its uniformity in particle size, which makes it ideal for creating a smooth finish on walls, floors, and other surfaces. Unlike other types of sand, masonry sand has fewer impurities, such as dirt, clay, and organic matter. Due to its superior quality, masonry sand is priced higher than regular sand.

Sand Filter Basics

Before we delve into whether masonry sand is suitable for pool filters, it's essential to understand the basics of how sand filters work. Sand filters rely on the principle of mechanical filtration to remove dirt, debris, and other contaminants from the pool water. When water is pumped through the filter, it passes through a bed of sand, which traps the debris while allowing the clean water to flow back into the pool. Over time, the sand becomes clogged with debris, reducing its effectiveness in filtering the pool water. When this happens, pool owners need to backwash the filter to flush out the accumulated debris and restore the filter's normal functioning.

Advantages of Masonry Sand

Masonry sand is finer than regular pool filter sand, which could increase the surface area of the filter media, thereby boosting the filtration efficiency of the pool filter. It may also result in lower backpressure and better water flow through the filter, which could prolong the lifespan of the pool pump. In addition, masonry sand is free of clay and organic matter, which can clog the pool filter and hamper its effectiveness in removing debris and contaminants from the pool water.

Disadvantages of Masonry Sand

Masonry sand may have some disadvantages when used in pool filters. While it is finer than regular pool filter sand, it may get clogged more easily and require more frequent backwashing to maintain optimal filtration. Masonry sand is also more expensive than regular sand, which could increase the overall cost of maintaining a pool. It is also more difficult to find masonry sand than regular pool filter sand.

Conclusion

So, can you use masonry sand in a pool filter? The answer is yes, but it may not be the most practical choice for most pool owners. While masonry sand has some advantages over regular sand, such as better filtration efficiency and fewer impurities, its higher cost and greater susceptibility to clogging may outweigh these benefits for most pool owners. Ultimately, the choice of filter medium should depend on your pool's specific needs and your budget. Consult with a pool maintenance professional to determine what type of filter sand is best suited for your pool.

In summary, maintaining a clean and clear pool requires choosing the right filter medium. While masonry sand can be used in pool filters, regular pool filter sand is the more practical and commonly used choice due to its low cost, easy availability, and proven filtration effectiveness. Keep your pool filter working effectively and ensure your pool stays crystal clear by regularly backwashing your filter and adding the recommended amount of sanitizer to your pool.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.

After about 5~10days ,or when the reading of the pressure gauge on the pump side of the filter has increased by about 0.2bars since the last backwash , backwash the filter as follows:
1. Stop the pump
2.Close the valves on the suction and return lines.
3.Open the cover of the pump and empty the filter gasket .
4.Refit the cover
5.Open the valve to the drain outlet
6.Turn the lever to BACKWASH
7. Open the valves to the suction and return lines.
8.Start the pump .Rinse the filter for about 1 to 2 minutes until the water in the sight glass is clear .
NOTE : Any electric heater must be off .
9. Stop the pump
10. Turn the lever to RINSE , start the pump and rinse for about 15~30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER . This is the normal operating position .
