Cleaning Your Pool Filter: A Step-by-Step Guide

Owning a pool is a luxury that many people enjoy, but cleaning and maintaining it can be quite a hassle. One of the most important components of a pool is the filter, which keeps the water clear and free of debris. Over time, the filter can become clogged and dirty, which can affect the efficiency and performance of the pool. In this article, we will discuss how you can clean your pool filter and keep it in top condition.

What is a Pool Filter?

Before we dive into the process of cleaning a pool filter, let's first take a look at what a pool filter is and how it works. A pool filter is designed to remove debris and particles from the water, including leaves, dirt, and bugs. There are three main types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Each type works differently, but the end result is the same – to keep your pool water clean and clear.

When to Clean Your Pool Filter

The frequency of pool filter cleaning will depend on the type of filter, how often the pool is used, and the amount of debris that falls into the water. Some signs that your pool filter may need to be cleaned include:

- Reduced pool water flow

- Cloudy water

- Increased pressure gauge readings

- Dirty or clogged filter

If you notice any of these signs, it's time to clean your pool filter.

How to Clean a Pool Filter

Now that you know when to clean your pool filter, let's take a look at how to do it.

Step 1: Turn off the pool pump

Before you begin, turn off the pool pump to prevent water from flowing through the filter.

Step 2: Open the filter and remove the elements

For a sand filter, remove the lid and use a scoop to remove the sand and debris from the filter. For a cartridge filter, remove the cartridge from the tank. For a DE filter, remove the grids or fingers from the inside of the tank.

Step 3: Rinse the elements

Once the elements are removed, rinse them thoroughly with a garden hose to remove any debris or dirt. For a sand filter, you may need to use a special sand filter cleaner to remove any built-up mineral deposits.

Step 4: Inspect the elements

While you're cleaning the elements, take a look at them to see if they need to be replaced. Cartridge filters should be replaced once a year, while sand and DE filters can last several years with proper maintenance.

Step 5: Reassemble and restart the pump

Once you've cleaned and inspected the filter elements, reassemble them and restart the pump. Check the pressure gauge reading to ensure that it's within the normal range.

Tips for Maintaining Your Pool Filter

Cleaning your pool filter is just one part of maintaining your pool. Here are some additional tips to help keep your filter in top condition:

- Backwash your filter regularly to remove any debris or dirt that has accumulated.

- Replace your filter elements as needed.

- Use a pool skimmer to remove debris from the surface of the water before it has a chance to sink to the bottom.

- Shock your pool regularly to kill bacteria and keep the water clear.

- Maintain a proper chemical balance in your pool by testing the water regularly and adjusting the pH and chlorine levels as needed.

Conclusion

Cleaning your pool filter is an important task that should be performed regularly to keep your pool water clean and clear. With the right tools and a little bit of time, you can easily maintain your pool filter and enjoy all the benefits that come with owning a pool.

After about 5~10days ,or when the reading of the pressure gauge on the pump side of the filter has increased by about 0.2bars since the last backwash , backwash the filter as follows:
1. Stop the pump
2.Close the valves on the suction and return lines.
3.Open the cover of the pump and empty the filter gasket .
4.Refit the cover
5.Open the valve to the drain outlet
6.Turn the lever to BACKWASH
7. Open the valves to the suction and return lines.
8.Start the pump .Rinse the filter for about 1 to 2 minutes until the water in the sight glass is clear .
NOTE : Any electric heater must be off .
9. Stop the pump
10. Turn the lever to RINSE , start the pump and rinse for about 15~30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER . This is the normal operating position .
11. Close the drain outlet valve and start the pump . Switch on the electric heater if any .
----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
