How to Backwash Pool Sand Filter?

Many people have a pool sand filter installed to help keep their pool looking clean and clear year-round. This is because sometimes simple leaf skimmers and chlorine can’t seem to do the trick. To keep your pool sand filters working efficiently, you must see their timely maintenance and "backwashing." Even if you are new to sand filters, it’s a lot simpler than it sounds. How To Backwash Pool Sand Filter?

Pool sand filters dirt, debris, and other solid contaminants from your pool. Over time, these can form sediments in your sand pool filter, making it difficult to filter water as efficiently. 

Backwashing will help break up these sediments and clear away the debris before it can start making its way back into your pool. If you notice the pressure in your pool filter falling, it needs to be backwashed.

Here is how it works:

1. Turn off Pool Pump

First, you will have to switch off your swimming pool filter system. Stop the water pumps and close the valves on the suction and return lines to the pool. Next, remove the cover of the pump and take out the filter gasket. If it is filled with debris, you should empty it promptly. Once done, cover the pump once again. Now, attach a backwash hose to your filter's backwash port or switch open the valve to the drain outlet. 

2. “Backwash” Filter Valve

Now, look at your multiport valve (which should be located on the top or side of your sand pool filter). Switch the handle to "Backwash." Open the valve to the suction, return lines, and turn on the pump. Water should start running out of the backwash hose. 

Let the water flow freely for 1 to 2 minutes until the water runs clear. Take a look at the water running in the sight glass for this; it should show you the water as it is being pumped through. 

Note here that you should only change the position of your multiport valves when the pool is closed. When turned on, the pool pump pushes huge amounts of water pressure. If you try to apply external pressure to the valve in this condition, it could get damaged or even break apart.

3. “Rinse” Filter Valve

Once the water in the sight glass is running clear, you move on to rinsing.  For this, switch the multiport valve to the “Rinse” position. Now switch on your pump once again and let the water flow for at least 1 full minute, or until the water in your sight glass runs clear.

4. Reset

Once this is done, you will have to reset the sand filter. Switch the lever back to the "Filter" position and close the drain outlet valve. All that's left is to switch on your pool pump, and you are all done!
