How to Drain a Sand Pool Filter

Swimming pool filters are critical components of any pool system that help keep your pool water free from harmful pathogens, debris and dirt. Sand filters, in particular, are a popular choice among pool owners because of their effectiveness in capturing even the smallest particles. However, over time, sand filters can become clogged with dirt and debris, reducing their efficiency and affecting the quality of pool water. The best way to prevent this from happening and prolong the life of your sand filter is by draining and replacing the sand periodically.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of draining a sand pool filter, complete with helpful tips and tricks to make it easier for you.

Why Drain a Sand Pool Filter?

Draining and replacing the old sand in your pool filter is essential for several reasons. First, as sand accumulates in the filter, it becomes clogged and therefore less efficient. The filter will have to work harder, and this can increase energy use, maintenance costs, and wear and tear on the pump.

Second, when a sand filter is not draining correctly, it can lead to water pooling in the filter and causing damage to the internal components. Over time, this can cause leaks and other issues that may require costly repairs.

Lastly, draining your sand filter offers an opportunity to inspect it more closely for any signs of wear and tear or other damage. By doing this, you can catch any problems early and prevent them from developing into costlier issues down the road.

How to Drain a Sand Pool Filter

Step 1: Turn off the pool pump

Before you begin, always turn off the pool pump so that there is no water flowing into the filter. Doing this will help prevent any water damage to internal parts of the filter and make it easier to work on.

Step 2: Release Pressure from the Filter System

Next, you will have to release the pressure that has built up within the filter. You can do this by opening the air relief valve located at the top of the filter. If you're unsure where this is located, refer to the filter instruction manual.

Step 3: Remove the Drain Plug

Once the pressure has been released from the filter, it's time to remove the drain plug. Typically, this plug is located at the bottom of the filter, and you'll need a wrench to loosen it. After removing the plug, locate the sand filter's laterals that are located under the drain pipe.

Step 4: Remove the Sand

Now you can begin removing the old sand. Take a scoop and start removing the sand by going from end to end of the filter. Be sure to remove all the sand by continuing to scoop and scoop until you reach the bottom of the filter.

When removing the sand, it is essential to wear protective gear such as gloves, a mask and eye protection as it may contain debris or chemicals harmful to your health.

Step 5: Inspect the Laterals

After removing the sand, take time to inspect the laterals. Make sure there are no cracks, chips or other damage. If you find any damage, replace them with new ones to ensure that they function effectively. Be sure to add a little bit of water to the sand filter and check for good distribution.

Step 6: Replacing the Sand

Once the sand is drained and laterals are intact, it is time to replace the sand in the filter. Before adding the new sand, ensure that the laterals are covered with the roofing felt so that sand does not clog them.

When adding new sand, use a sand scoop or funnel to pour it into the filter. Be careful not to overfill the filter – for most sand filters, the ideal range is usually between half-full and two-thirds full.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Plug & Turn the Pump Back On

After adding new sand, reattach the drain plug, and slowly increase the pump's power to get it back to the normal operating levels.

Conclusion

Draining a sand pool filter is an essential maintenance task for any pool owner. By following these simple steps, you can make the process more manageable and prevent costly damage to your pool's filtration system. Keep your pool clean, clear, and healthy by properly maintaining the sand filter.
