How to Backwash a Pentair Sand Pool Filter

Owning a pool can be an enjoyable experience for the whole family. But as a pool owner, it’s important to keep up with maintenance to keep it clean and functioning properly. One crucial aspect of pool maintenance is backwashing your pool filter. In this article, we’ll show you how to backwash a Pentair sand pool filter so that you can enjoy crystal clear water all summer long.

What is Backwashing?

Backwashing is the process of cleaning out your pool filter by running water through it in reverse. The water flows through the filter backwards, pushing out any debris and dirt that has built up. Backwashing helps to keep your pool filter functioning properly and allows it to effectively remove contaminants from your pool water.

When Should You Backwash?

You should backwash your pool filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI higher than the clean, start-up pressure. This increase in pressure indicates that the filter is becoming clogged and needs to be cleaned. You should also backwash your pool filter after any heavy use, such as after a large pool party, to ensure that it is functioning correctly.

How to Backwash a Pentair Sand Pool Filter

1. Turn off the pool pump: Before backwashing your pool filter, make sure that the pool pump is turned off. This will prevent any water from flowing through the filter while you clean it.

2. Turn the multiport valve to “backwash”: The multiport valve is located on the top of your Pentair sand pool filter. Turn it to the “backwash” position to begin the backwashing process.

3. Turn the pool pump back on: Once the multiport valve is turned to “backwash”, turn the pool pump back on. Water will now flow backwards through the filter, pushing out any dirt and debris that has built up.

4. Monitor the backwash: Keep an eye on the backwash water running out of the waste line. Once the water becomes clear and free of debris, the backwashing process is complete.

5. Turn the pool pump off: Once the backwashing process is complete, turn off the pool pump.

6. Turn the multiport valve to “rinse”: Turn the multiport valve to the “rinse” position to flush out any remaining debris from the filter.

7. Turn the pool pump back on: Turn the pool pump back on to enable water to flow through the filter while it’s being rinsed.

8. Monitor the rinse: Monitor the water flowing out of the waste line while the filter is being rinsed. Once the water is clear, the rinse process is complete.

9. Turn the pool pump off: Once the rinse process is complete, turn off the pool pump.

10. Turn the multiport valve to “filter”: The final step is to turn the multiport valve back to the “filter” position, which allows water to flow through the filter as it normally would.

Conclusion

Backwashing is a crucial aspect of pool maintenance that should be performed regularly to keep your pool filter functioning effectively. By following these steps, you can confidently backwash your Pentair sand pool filter, ensuring that your pool water stays crystal clear all summer long. Always consult your pool owner’s manual and follow manufacturer guidelines for pool maintenance.
